POINTER'S OPERATIONAL SYSTEM SUMMARIZES THE FIRST HALF OF 2022 IN VEHICLE THEFTS COMPARED TO 2021

  • The deployment of Israeli security forces in Operation Breakwater since the recent wave of terrorist attacks contributed to a decline in attempted and incidents of vehicle theft.
  • A 30% increase in vehicle theft attempts and incidents through "Combine" – collaborations between car drivers and thieves.
  • Hybrid vehicles already account for 8% of theft.
  • The central region leads in attempted theft with 34% compared to 24% last year
  • 48% OF THEFT ATTEMPTS ARE FROM SUVS – AN INCREASE OF 16% COMPARED TO 2021.
  • 63% increase in two-wheeled vehicle theft.

The operational division of Pointer from PowerFleet Group, the company that locates and recovers stolen vehicles, concludes the first half of 2022 in vehicle thefts.

The first half of the year ends with an increase of 145% compared to 2021. Operation Breakwater in recent months, in which all the security forces and the IDF participate, openly and covertly, and who exert daily pressure on the terror and terror squads, somewhat restrained the wave of thefts that raged in the first quarter. Ed is still the tip of thefts significantly higher than in recent years. Yet in about 80% of all car thefts, a mobile disruptor is used, which in most cases is operated by sophisticated theft squads.

The squads are composed of "field" and "technologists" people. The thieves' squads raid pre-coordinated areas with a division of duties that include a shuttle vehicle, a preliminary patrol vehicle to locate the vehicles they want to steal, a "leading" vehicle that transports the professional burglars, and after the theft leads ahead and reports police checkpoints along the way to the driver of the stolen vehicle driving behind. The drivers drive the vehicle to slaughterhouses in the territories of the Authority.

Field personnel conduct preliminary patrols to locate the vehicles, observe and collect information. Also play the role of alerting, when preparing the vehicle for theft, of police patrols or supervision. In addition, as mentioned, there is a leading driver on a stolen vehicle or scooter and a "commander" in the field, who coordinates and manages the entire incident. The squads raid at once and "clean" several vehicles from the same area with the disruptor.

The cells are financed by criminal organizations and some of the stolen vehicles sold in PA territory, or as spare parts in Israel, finance the criminal and terrorist organizations, drugs and prostitution.

48% of theft attempts are SUVs:
Jeeps and SUVs, which are increasingly popular on the road, are particularly sought after by car thieves and account for about 48% of all thefts, an increase of 17% compared to last year.

8% of theft attempts are hybrids.
The figure indicates the great popularity of these vehicles in Israel and the great demand for spare parts.

18% of all thefts are two-wheeled vehicles, an increase of 63% compared to last year. Criminal gangs prefer to arrive at the scene with a two-wheeled vehicle and get away quickly.

Disrupting our lives:
In 80% of all car thefts, a mobile disruptor is used, indicating organized and sophisticated gangs.

A CELLULAR DISRUPTOR IS A SMALL, ILLEGAL DEVICE THAT MASKS CELLULAR RECEPTION AND GPS TRANSMISSION IN A RADIUS AROUND IT. THE DEVICE DOES NOT PREVENT THE VEHICLE FROM BEING LOCATED OR RECEIVING ALERTS FROM IT, BUT DISRUPTS AND DELAYS THEM, THUS GIVING THIEVES THE VALUABLE MINUTES THEY NEED TO COMPLETE THE THEFT.

POINTER HAS A DEDICATED AND SEPARATE RF COMMUNICATION NETWORK THAT ALLOWS TRANSMITTERS WHEN DETECTING CELLULAR DISRUPTION TO SWITCH TO ANOTHER FREQUENCY, WHICH IS NOT AFFECTED BY THE DISRUPTOR AND ENABLES THE LOCATION AND LOCATION OF THE VEHICLE.

Pointer's hybrid transmitters (which work on both cellular and radio frequencies) automatically detect the use of a cellular disruptor near the vehicle, switch to an alternate frequency transmitter and issue an immediate alert to the operational center about the attempted disruption.

The most popular theft methods of 2022:
Cellular disruption – 80% of theft attempts are carried out with a combination of a cellular disruptor alongside the following methods:

Cooperation: There has been an alarming 30% increase in attempted theft through collaborations between drivers and car thieves.
Connecting to a car computer and duplicating a key: The leading method of theft is still duplication of a "cocoon" key in the theft process, while connecting to an OBD socket through which you connect to the car computer. The thieves encode a new key and delete the existing keys. About 47% of all recorded theft attempts were based on this method.
Violent assault: Violent assault of the vehicle by replacing the vehicle's computer accounted for 34% of all thefts.
In order to deal with this phenomenon, Pointer developed a technology in which the transmitter in the vehicle detects the use of a cellular disruptor and sends an alert to the operational center.
Theft of keys from the customer's home (double): when there is a direct connection between breaking into the customer's home and the vehicle in the adjacent parking lot. accounted for 9% of all thefts recorded this year.
Theft by an authorized person: Usually carried out by duplicating a key by an authorized user who has received keys and a valid code of the vehicle. This method of theft accounted for 9% of all thefts committed this year.
Robberies and motor vehicle theft: accounted for 1% of all thefts this year. The most prominent incident this year was the theft of the car in which he was a toddler and his location by the Pointer hotline.
