Magen David Adom – Solution for CPR systems

Pointer leads MDA to the next stage of rescue services – IoT technology

Pointer has developed a smart IoT-based solution for nationwide defibrillator management. The company is at the forefront of advancing MDA (Magen David Adom) to the next stage of rescue services through IoT technology-based services. This involves the provision of a smart case for storing the defibrillator and the deployment of more than 1,500 boxes throughout Israel.

About the Company

Magen David Adom is the national rescue organization of the State of Israel for pre-hospitalization emergency medical services and blood services. The organization treats hundreds of thousands of life-saving cases each year, using the most advanced technological devices in the world, according to accepted treatment protocols of the American Heart Association. Magen David Adom donates hundreds of thousands of whole blood units and blood components using the apheresis method, processes them into components and performs all the necessary tests in designated laboratories.

Magen David Adom is at the forefront of technology, computing and professionalism in these fields.

The Challenge

A defibrillator is a device that restores regular heart rhythm by delivering an electric shock to the heart, using electrodes attached to the patient's body close to the heart, without having to wait for an ambulance or go to the hospital. This is a device that has been proven to save lives, but its speed of use is critical in the first few minutes after a cardiac event, so it is important that it is available and close to the person experiencing the event.

MDA planned to deploy defibrillators throughout the country, but were looking for a solution that would enable locating, commanding and controlling the device, including the ability to make the device accessible remotely so that lives could be saved even when there are no rescue teams available.

The Solution

Pointer was chosen to characterize and implement a comprehensive solution that includes the development of a custom iron case designed specifically for the defibrillator. Inside the box was a Pointer monitoring unit that enables precise location and includes cellular communication that transmits data directly to MDA's information systems.

In case of emergency, the boxes are mapped and call center representatives can remotely locate and open the relevant iron box containing the defibrillator, activate a siren and flashing lights that make it easier to find the box, for quick use.

Additionally, the solution incorporates sensors that monitor various parameters within the case and send alerts to MDA's emergency call center in the event of a fault detection. These alerts include: the defibrillator box being open, the defibrillator being removed from the case, the defibrillator not functioning properly, the device's battery voltage falling below the required level (monitored by a unique sensor for the defibrillator battery), and an increase in temperature inside the iron case of the defibrillator, among others. Detection of certain parameter malfunctions triggers an immediate solution, such as activating a change in temperature. Subsequently, a command is received from the monitoring unit to activate an internal fan, ventilating the defibrillator box and reducing the temperature inside.
Results and conclusions

Currently, more than 1,500 defibrillator boxes are deployed throughout Israel.

Pointer's technological solution makes it possible to maintain the integrity of the defibrillators and mainly enables anyone, even without medical training, to call the call center 24 hours a day and receive immediate guidance and guidance to the nearest defibrillator, perform CPR and give MDA teams additional time to arrive and save lives.
